WHAT DOES MYOFASCIAL MEAN?
Fascia is a thin tissue that covers every muscle and every fiber within each muscle, as well as all the organs of the body. From the Latin root myo (muscle) and fascia (band), this connective tissue supports and protects our organs and joints. Pain is produced when there is pressure in the “fascia”. This causes these fibrous bands of connective tissue that encase our muscles, tendons, ligaments and organs to shorten and become “tight”. The stresses of the tight fascia can cause pain, not only at the area of injury, but may radiate pain to other areas of the body causing symptoms such as headaches, back or neck pain, numbness, lightheadedness, tender areas, muscle spasm and fibromyalgia-like symptoms.
Injury, abnormal posture, stress and illness can interfere with the proper alignment and function of this support structure of connective tissue, producing inflammation, scarring and adhesions of the fascia. This a chief cause of pain and restricted motion, which can escalate over time, to the point where it becomes chronic and unrelenting.
HOW MYOFASCIAL RELEASE WORKS:
Myofascial Release is a specific combination of stretching and massage techniques using a type of hands-on manipulation to promote healing and relieve pain caused by soft tissue problems. This therapy releases the tightness of the fascia covering our muscular system and breaks down adhesions. Pressure on our muscles, nerves and joints are diminished, and relief is enjoyed as a balance is restored.
This therapy utilizes easy sustained stretches to lengthen the muscles and connective tissues. First, a light stretch is applied to a small area of muscle in a specific direction. As the muscle begins to relax the stretch is increased. The movement is repeated until the area has completely relaxed. Then, the next area is released until the spasms calm, adhesions soften, and the myofascia lengthens.
BENEFITS OF MYOFASCIAL RELEASE:
Reinforces healing of painful, stressed and injured tissues.
Restores muscle tone, thus frees myofascial adhesions
Lengthens the muscles and fascia, reducing spasm and pain
Improves circulation and nerve function.
Enhances the body's innate healing abilities
Returns normal muscle function
Addresses long-standing neck or back pain, recurring headaches, fibromyalgia and old sports injuries.
